The GCL sandwiches granular sodium bentonite between two geotextile layers (or bonds it to an HDPE film). On contact with water the bentonite swells into a dense gel with extremely low permeability, and the self-sealing behavior closes small punctures – a reliable mineral barrier that installs fast even on irregular terrain.
Typical Specification
| Bentonite mass per area | ≥ 4800 g/m² |
|---|---|
| Width | 5.0 – 6.0 m |
| Roll length | 30 – 40 m |
| Hydraulic conductivity | ≤ 5 × 10⁻⁹ cm/s (typical) |
Key Advantages
- Self-healing against punctures and settlement cracks
- Overlaps weld naturally – no thermal welding needed
- Performs well under freeze-thaw and drying cycles
Applications
- Landfill base liners and caps
- Secondary containment and tank farms
- Canal, pond and lake sealing
- Combination with geomembrane for double-barrier systems
